Senior Awards

POTTSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR AWARDS PROGRAM - MAY 12, 2008 - 7:00 P.M.

  1. Calvin J. Swavely Memorial Scholarship Award - Interest
  This award is presented to that member of the graduating class who is among the twenty students with the highest scholastic averages.  The student selected must demonstrate financial need to continue his/her education at an institution of higher learning.  Mr. Swavely was President of the Pottstown Board of School Directors for numerous years.

  2. Richard J. Ricketts, Jr. Scholarship - Interest on a Trust Fund
The Richard J. Ricketts, Jr. Scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior who has been accepted by an accredited college.  The criteria for the award shall include varsity level athletic participation, school citizenship, academic ability, and financial need.  The award should, on alternating years, be awarded to male and female athletes.

  3. Edmund and Robert Hedgepeth Memorial Scholarships - Interest
These awards are presented in memory of Edmund and Robert Hedgepeth.  These scholarships are awarded to two students of the graduating class who have improved their lives during their years in the Pottstown High School.

 The Max Nuscher Award - $200 Cash Award
  This annual award is presented by The Pottstown Clergy Association in memory of
                         Rev. Dr. Max Nuscher.  This award is presented to the graduating senior who has
                         written an essay on the topic of “How My Faith Influences My Daily Actions.”

4. Earl G. Ewing Award - $500 Bond
This award is in memory of Earl G. Ewing.  The recipient is to be a member of the senior class who embodies the following positive attributes: outgoing personality, articulate, dedicated to family and personal well-being, intelligent with future focus, goal oriented, driven to succeed.  The recipient need not be the brightest scholar or the best athlete, but should be well-rounded and well-grounded.

 5.  Gregory Boyle Memorial Criminal Justice Scholarship - $500 Award
  The student selected for this award must be planning to major in the criminal justice field, preferably in the law enforcement area.

  6.  George Pron/Paul Seton Marine Corps League #450 Award - $250 Cash Award
  Presented to a member of the senior class who has a 3.5 grade point average and has been accepted by an accredited institution of higher learning, and who has been an officer in a school sponsored activity, been involved in community activities, and is a good citizen.  Financial need of the student will also be considered in the selection process.
       
 7.  The Guy Sperat Family Award - $100 Bond
This award is presented to the graduating business education student planning to enter a two-year or four-year education program in the accounting or teaching field.  Selection will be based on a B+ grade in accounting and financial need.

8.  Citizens for Fair Real Estate Taxes Award - $100 Bond
To that member of the graduating class who attended Pottstown Senior High School for four years and who has maintained the highest cumulative average in college preparatory mathematics courses. Consideration is given to the number of math courses taken.

 9.  Father Bally Council #1192 Knights of Columbus Achievement Award - $100 Bond
This award is presented to a deserving senior student who has not received any other
major academic award and has worked hard over their years at Pottstown High School.

 10. Father Bally Council #1192 Knights of Columbus Prize - $100 Bond
Presented to that member of the graduating class who has attended the Pottstown Senior High School for four years and who has attained the highest average in the college preparatory course.

11.  Ray A. Kroc Youth Achievement Award - Medallion/Certificate and $100 Cash Award
Presented to a senior student who has demonstrated the characteristics leading to the all around excellence exemplified by Ray A. Kroc. This student possesses a dynamic
business acumen, hard work ethics, is a good school citizen and involved in community activities. This award is a medallion and a certificate presented by McDonald's.

 12.  Luther D. Showalter Science Award - $100 Cash Award
Presented by the Pottstown Lodge of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks to the pupil of the Pottstown High School graduating class with the highest cumulative average for scientific subjects in their four years at the school. Consideration is given also to the number of courses
taken.

13. Society of Women Engineers - Certificates
These awards are presented by the Society of Women Engineers to recognize the achievements of women students in the study of mathematics and science.  These awards require that the recipient must have completed three years of science and three years of mathematics with distinction.  In addition, recipients must be students who have been active citizens of the school and/or community.

 14.  Jack L. Maloney Award (Class of 1933) - $300 Cash Award
To be presented each year to a science student who has excelled in that field, but who has not received major recognition in this or any other core academic curriculum.

 15.  D. Willard Sensenig Award - Interest on Trust Fund & Name Inscribed on Permanent Plaque
  This academic award is presented in the memory of D. Willard Sensenig who taught physics at Pottstown High School for 39 years.  The senior with the highest grade point average in the science of physics is the recipient of this award.

30. Anchor Club Award - $25 Cash Awards
These awards are presented to  senior members of the Anchor Club who have provided outstanding service to the school and community.

31. Pilot Club of Valley Forge Outstanding Anchor Award - $100 Cash Award and Certificate
  Presented by the Pilot Club of Valley Forge to that senior member of the Anchor Club who has provided outstanding service to the school and community.

 16.  STV Incorporated Award - $500 Award
Presented to that senior student who has the highest scholastic average of those who have enrolled in a school of engineering for full-time study.

17.  Dr. Ray E. Feick Scholarship - Interest
  This award is given to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by an institution of higher learning in a math related field.  Preference will be given to a student who plans to enter the teaching field.

18.  Ruth and Lorin Leister Prizes - Two $100 Cash Awards
This award is presented to the graduating students with the highest average in mathematics. Mathematics courses considered for selecting these students shall include Algebra I, II, Geometry, and other advanced courses in math.

19. National Honor Society Scholarship Awards - $150 Cash Awards
Presented to the senior members of the National Honor Society who have excelled in academics and extracurricular activities and plan to attend an institution of higher learning.

20. American Legion English Award - $ 100 Cash Award, Certificate and Medal
This award is presented to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative average in English.

21. American Legion Patriotism Award - Certificate and Medal
Presented to the graduating student who has exhibited patriotism, courage, and leadership.

22. Elisabeth E. Stevenson Scholarship Memorial Award - Interest on Trust Fund
Presented to the member of the graduating class who attended Pottstown Senior High School for four years and who has attained the highest average in college preparatory history courses.
Consideration is given to the number of courses taken.

23. Joseph J. Derro Memorial Award - Interest
This award is presented by the Class of 1990 to that graduating senior who demonstrated courage in the face of adversity, exhibited strength of character to overcome opposition and who exemplified those qualities of good school citizenship, concern, respect and diligence toward his or her school, teachers, and fellow classmates. This award is the interest on a trust fund.

24.. Heather Davidheiser Frantz Memorial Award - $100 Cash Award
This award is presented in memory of Heather Davidheiser Frantz and is given to the outstanding history student in the current graduating class.

25. Foreign Language Prize - $50 Bonds
These awards are presented to the graduating students who exhibited outstanding skills in
writing and speaking the French & Spanish language.

5.      Mary Jane Leberman (Class of 1952)  Financial Aid Scholarship - $500 Award
  This award is presented to a member of the senior class who has attended Pottstown for four
  years and who has been accepted by an institute of higher learning in the field of business
                        education or business administration.  The need and the academic ability are the two
                        criteria considered for this award.

26.  Norman S. Martin Award (Class of 1925) - Interest on Trust Fund
  To be presented to the graduating student who has attended PHS for four years as a business education student and has attained the highest grades in business education courses.

27. Earl R. Strange Award -  Interest
To be given to the business education student who has achieved the highest scholastic average and has been a member of the department for at least two years.

95. Leon H. Seeders Scholarship - Interest on Trust Fund
  This scholarship is awarded to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by an institute of higher learning in the field of business (administration).  The financial need of the student will be considered in the selection process.

28.  Make A Difference Award - $100 Cash Awards
The Making A Difference Awards are awarded to senior year student government members who have been active member for at least three years, who will be attending a post-secondary school, and who has demonstrated leadership in the area of community service to both their school and the community.

29.  Nelson Burnett  Memorial Scholarship Award (Class of 1994) - Interest
  The recipient of this award shall be a person who has devoted himself/herself unselfishly for the benefit of the graduating class for a minimum of two years.  This person does not have to be a class officer, but may be a class officer.  The selection committee will include the class advisors of the graduation class.

32. Class of 1944 Scholarship Award - $500 Cash Award
  This award is presented to a member of the graduating class who is a deserving student and of good character and with integrity intact.  The student must already have been accepted to an institution of higher learning and may not be a recipient of any type of financial assistance.

33. Class of 1924 - School Service Award - $50 Bond
Presented to the senior who has attended PHS for four years and who has given faithful and valuable service to the school as well as having displayed dependability and responsibility.

34. School Service Awards - $75 Cash Awards
Presented to the two seniors who have attended PHS for four years and who have consistently worked for the advancement of the school.

35. Women's Club of Pottstown Salutatorian Prize - $50 Cash Award
The salutatorian award is presented to the member of the graduating class who attained the second highest general scholastic average during the four years in high school.

 Women’s Club of Pottstown Scholarship Award - $500.00 Cash Award
  This scholarship is presented to a graduating student who has been selected by the Women’s Club Scholarship Committee.

36. Howard Brown Athletic Scholarship - $500 1st year/$200 thereafter
This award will be awarded to an outstanding student athlete who plan to attend college and exemplifies valiant leadership, distinguished character, superior work ethic, stellar athletic ability, and sparkling "old-school" values on and off the court or playing field.  The focus and goal of the award are to encourage and support the athletes not only his/her entrance into the college arena, but also continuing throughout his/her entire collegiate experience.  The recipient of this award will be given not less than $200.00 each year of pre-graduate college attendance thereafter (for a maximum of four years, including redshirt or transfers).  The honoree will be given not less than $200.00 per year towards scholastic and/or personal expenses.

37.  Pottstown Alumni Wrestlers' Scholarship - $100/yr./4 yrs.
Presented to a graduating senior member of the wrestling team who has shown those attributes which embody the philosophy and characteristics of the Trojan wrestling tradition.

38. Earl Strom Financial Aid Scholarship – Interest
  This award is presented to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by an accredited
                        college.  The primary criteria for the award shall be based upon the ability and need of the
  person to receive the award.

39. Donald Rigg Scholar-Athlete Award - $100 cash award
This award shall be given to a member of the graduating class of Pottstown Senior High School who has shown superior ability in one or more sports and who has achieved superior grades during their high school career. This student would be an athlete and scholar.

 40.  Donald J. Lash, Jr. Award - Gold Medallion and Name Inscribed on Permanent Trophy
  Presented to the senior member of the wrestling team who has demonstrated leadership, achievement, school and community service and honor.

41.  PHS Athletic Association Awards - Gold Trophies
To those graduating students who have given the most service to the various sports throughout their high school careers.

 42.  David Mauger II Memorial Basketball Awards -_ $100 Bonds
This award is presented to the members of the senior class who demonstrated those qualities of hard work, dedication, loyalty and a desire to excel on the basketball court as well as in the classroom.  (They do not have to be outstanding players, but can be.)

43. Carroll "Mush" Bechtel Sr. & Carroll “Mush” Bechtel Jr.  Awards -   Watches
This award is given to the graduating male and female seniors who are considered the most worthy all around athletes.  These watches are given in memory of Mr. Bechtel Sr. who coached football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, and track in the early 1900’s.   Mush Bechtel was one of the first coaches at PHS.  His son, Mush Jr., attended PHS playing varsity basketball and tennis and served his country during WWII.  As proprietor of Bechtel’s Sport Shop he donated numerous volunteer hours and unlimited monetary contributions to the promotion of youth sports in the Pottstown Area.

44. C. Jane Moses Kunsch Scholarship - $1,000.00 Scholarship - $500.00 for fall semester and $500.00 for the spring semester
  This scholarship is in memory of C. Jane Moses Kunsch who passed away on July 1, 2003.  Janie was a graduate of the Class of 1968 from Pottstown High School and was a cheerleader for 5 years.  This scholarship is awarded to a cheerleader who best exemplifies school spirit and who will be furthering their education following graduation.
 
45.  The Lawrence Harvey Outstanding Track Athlete Awards –Watch/Gift
These awards are presented to senior athletes who have shown superior ability in the sport of track and field.

46.  Girls’ Field Hockey Leadership Award - $100 Cash Award
  This award is presented to the outstanding and deserving member of the hockey team who has shown team spirit and leadership.

47. Girls’ Lacrosse Leadership Award - $75.00 Cash Award
  This award is presented to a member of the lacrosse team who has helped establish a tradition of excellence and service in the lacrosse program and has demonstrated the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and citizenship, and maintained a high degree of academic performance.

48.  John J. Cherneskie Softball Leadership Awards - $50 Cash Award and Framed Certificates
This award is presented annually to softball players who have shown leadership, loyalty, and dedication to the softball team, and who have earned average or above average grades.

49.  Sports Enterprise, Inc. Athletic Service Award - $100 Bond
Presented by the Sports Enterprise, Inc. Athletic Association to the member of the graduating class who has given the most service to the athletic program aside from participating as a player.

50.  Austin "Pat" Sundstrom Honor Award - $100 Bond
To a member of the graduating class on the baseball team who has shown the most improvement in performing the skills of baseball.

51.  Rupert PTA Award - Two $200 Cash Awards
To the two students in the graduating class who have obtained the highest average over their four years in high school and who attended the Rupert Elementary School.

52. The Franklin PTA Award – $250 Scholarship 
  This award is presented each year to a graduating senior who attended Franklin Elementary
  School during the upper three elementary levels and who has been accepted to an institution of higher learning. 

53.   Federation of Pottstown Teachers Scholarship - $800 a Year for Four Years
Presented by the Federation of Pottstown Teachers to a graduating student selected by the committee on the basis of class rank, school and community service, and need.

54. Edgewood EVO Award - $200 Cash Prize 
Presented to the student who attended only Edgewood Elementary School and has attained the highest average over their four years in the Pottstown High School.

55.  Elizabeth B. Barth Senior Award - Cash Awards and Certificates
These awards are presented by the Elizabeth B. Barth Parent Teacher Association to the graduating students with the highest, second highest and third highest grade point average of students who attended Barth Elementary School.

56. Elizabeth B. Barth Citizenship Award - $100 Cash Award & Certificate
This award is presented by the Elizabeth B. Barth Parent Teacher Association to the graduating senior who attended E. B. Barth Elementary in their last three years, and continues to honor the 4 R’s – Rules, Rights, Respect, and Responsibility.

57.  Lincoln PTA Award - $400 Cash Award
This award is presented to the student who has already been accepted by a college and attended Lincoln Elementary School.

58. Nancy S. Heifer School Nurse Academic Scholarship Award - $100 Bond
Presented to a health services student who has displayed positive traits of motivation, diligence, and compassion both in the classroom and clinical setting and who has been accepted by a school of nursing.

59. Doe Club Prize - $400 Cash Award
To that senior student having the highest scholastic average entering the field of nursing.

60.  Senior Award for Health Services - $100 Cash Award
  Sponsored by Manatawny Manor, this award is presented to the student who has participated in the health service program for two years and has displayed compassion, integrity, reliability, and responsibility, both in class and in clinical experience.

61.  William F. Lamb Scholarship - Interest on Trust Fund
A scholarship in the name of William F. Lamb shall be awarded to the graduating seniors who, in the opinion of the selection committee, most clearly exemplifies the principle which guided their life:  dedication to excellence in the area of performing arts. The central criterion of the award shall be based upon the level of artistic achievement, but attitude, school citizenship, cooperation, participation in school activities and intent for future involvement in the performing arts shall be contributing factors in the selection of the recipient.

63. Renee Drumheller Memorial Band Award –3 - $50 Cash Awards and Names Inscribed on Permanent Trophy
This award is presented to three senior band students who best exemplifies the dedication, loyalty, and hard working qualities that Renee possessed during her lifetime.

64.  Louis Armstrong Jazz Award - Certificate, Pin, and Trophy
  In recognition of outstanding achievement by instrumentalists in the field of jazz as demonstrated through superior musicianship, character, and individual creativity.

94. William J. Schinstine Scholarship - Interest on Trust Fund
  The William Schinstine Scholarship is awarded to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by an institution of higher learning and plans to continue performing music at college.  The financial need of the student will be considered in the selection process.  Students majoring in percussion will receive special consideration for the scholarship.

65.  Pottstown Schools Music Association Award - Two $100 Cash Awards
To the members of the graduating class who have been a member of the Pottstown High School choral and band groups for three years, who have rendered consistent, faithful and valuable service.

93. Harvey Leroy Wilson Scholarships
  During the 1920's, while still a student at Pottstown High School, Harvey Leroy Wilson brought together a group of student musicians to form what would later become the Pottstown High School Band.  After high school, he furthered his education at the Curtis Institute, eventually achieving a doctorate.  Returning to Pottstown in the early 1940's, he became the band director first at the junior high school, and later at the high school.  After serving in the Air Force during World War II, he eventually became the Supervisor of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio, and upon retirement, returned to Pottstown.

  Upon his death, he bequeathed his entire estate in trust for the purpose of funding the post-high school education of students of music in the Pottstown School District. Therefore, a scholarship shall be awarded each year to graduating seniors who have exhibited a commitment to excellence in music and intend to major in music through college.

66.  Choir Service Awards - $50 Cash Awards
  To the members of the choir who unselfishly gave time and service for the advancement of choral activities.

67.  Vocal Music Awards - $ 50 Cash Award
  To the members of the graduating class of the Pottstown Senior High School who have consistently made valuable contributions to vocal music.

68. Alan O. Care Memorial Art Awards - $300 and $250 Cash Awards
  Presented to graduating seniors who have attended Pottstown Senior High School for four years and have excelled in drawing with an eye for detail and realism and completed art classes in the 11th and 12th years.

69.  Pottstown Area Artist Guild Prize - $75 Cash Award
The Pottstown Area Artist's Guild presents this award annually to the graduating student who exhibits skills, discipline, and creativity.

 70.  Haas Memorial Art Award - $100 Cash Award
  This award is presented to a senior who exhibits a spirit of effort in their art work, and class participation. This award is donated by Candi Haas Simmons in memory of her parents Mary and Alfred H. Haas, Jr.

71. Haas Memorial Stage Crew Award - $50 Cash Award
  This award is presented to a senior stage crew member who exhibits a spirit of co-operation and
                         dedication in the stage crew.

71.  Art Service Awards - $100 Cash Awards & Sketchbook
  These awards are presented to the graduating students who have rendered distinguished and valuable service to the high school through their artistic talent.  These artists have donated both time and talent for the advancement of art.

72.  Special Recognition Awards for Art - $100 Cash Award & Sketchbook
  This award is presented to the graduating senior who has shown an exceptional creative energy in their artistic endeavors.

73. Senior Art Awards - $100 Cash Awards & Portfolios
  Given to the senior students who have achieved a high level of artistic and perceptual awareness from experimenting with different media.  These students selected have explored creative directions in art by using original approaches.  The pupils have been an inspiration to classmates and, most importantly, have shown a dedication to art.
 
74.  Class of 1972 Memorial Award - $100 Cash Award
  This award is presented to a deserving senior in the top 10% of the class who has not been recognized for their achievements by any other major academic award.  This award is given in memory of the deceased members of the Class of 1972.

75.  Kiwanis Prize American History and Civics Award - Name Inscribed on a Permanent Trophy, $200 Bond and Certificate
  To that member of the graduating class of Pottstown Senior High School who has attained the highest proficiency in American history and civics.

76.  L. Ernest Pickard Award - $200 Bond and Certificate
This award is presented to the graduating senior who has been an outstanding member of the Key Club for two years and who has been active in Key Club Activities.

77.  W.O. Cressman Award - $200 Bond and Certificate
To that pupil in the graduating class who has demonstrated the greatest proficiency in the vocational work of the school.

78.  Geb Zollers Memorial Scholarship- Scholarship
Mr. Geb Zollers was one of the original 1924 charter members of the Pottstown Kiwanis Club.  He loved children and Kiwanis.  He was a member of the Pottstown Kiwanis Club until his death at the age of 104.  Mr. Zollers left monies for the Pottstown Kiwanis Foundation to be given to students to further their education.  The recipient of this award is:

79.  Joseph G. Rinaldi Vocational-Technical Scholarship - $250 Scholarship
Mr. Rinaldi was a former assistant principal and director of vocational education at Pottstown High School where he had worked more than 25 years.  Mr. Rinaldi was a strong advocate for vocational and technical training.  His efforts influenced the lives and careers of many area students.  This annual memorial scholarship has been established for Pottstown High School students pursuing further education in vocational and technical careers.

80. Dawn K. Corrado Memorial Scholarship Award - $100 Cash Award
This award is presented to a senior who has been involved in school sponsored activities, community activities, and is a good citizen.

81. Tri-County Area Federal Credit Union Award - $50 Award
Presented to the graduating senior who has participated in the cooperative education program and has demonstrated excellent work habits and has represented their employer and Pottstown High School in an exemplary manner.

82. DECA Achievement Scholarship - Cash Awards
These awards are presented to the graduating seniors who have been members of DECA for at least 3 years, have demonstrated outstanding leadership, and have competed in all three years of membership.  These students exemplify the commitment, scholarship, community service and dedication necessary to be an outstanding DECA student and are excellent examples to the underclassmen in the chapter.

83. SREB Awards of Educational Achievement – Certificates
These certificates are presented to senior students.  These students are to be commended for completing a college-preparatory course of study in at least two of three subject areas (i.e., English, mathematics and/or science) and completing a concentration in a career/technical area, mathematics/science or the humanities and meeting the performance goals in all three subject areas on the HSTW Assessment.

84.  Dana Spicer Driveshaft Manufacturing, Inc. - $500 Cash Award
  This award is presented to a senior student who is pursuing post-secondary education preferably in material preparation, welding or manufacturing.

85. Randall J. Nester Scholarship Award - Interest
A scholarship presented to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by a post-secondary institution of higher learning and selected for the award by a committee consisting of a member of the Board of Trustees of Partners in Pottstown Public Schools Foundation, Inc., Senior High School administrator, a Senior High School guidance counselor, and two faculty members _ one teacher from the vocational department. The committee shall consider the financial need of the student and consideration to be given to a student who has majored in a vocational field.

86. R.B. Hunter Award - $100 Award
To the graduating senior in the Building Trades Vocational Program who has displayed qualities of dependability, motivation, diligence, and cooperation.

87.  Joan A. (Herpst) Pomponio Memorial Scholarship Award - $1,000 Award
Presented to a member of the senior class of Pottstown High School who has been accepted by an accredited institution of higher learning.  The financial need of the student is a criterion for the award.

88. Robert C. & Virginia B. Shultz Awards - Interest
  These awards are presented to the members of the graduating class who have demonstrated financial need to attend a four year college, a two year college, or a two year vocational program.  These students will be selected from the twenty members of the graduating class with the highest scholastic averages.

89. George S. Ralston Humanities Award - Interest on a Trust Fund
Presented to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by a post secondary institution of learning to pursue a study in the area of humanities.  Consideration for the financial need of this student and to a student pursuing a branch of learning concerned with the humanities will be the two primary factors in selecting the award winner.   The student chosen should have exhibited during his high school career a sincere interest in community activities and service and in promoting human welfare. In addition, all qualifications being equal, a student attending Lock Haven University should be given additional consideration.

90. Central Staff Educational Scholarship - $1,000 Scholarship
The Pottstown School District Central Staff Educational Scholarship will be awarded to a Pottstown High School graduating senior who has been accepted into a school of education to become a certified public school teacher.  This scholarship should be awarded, if at all possible, to a deserving Pottstown High School senior who is not the recipient of any other major scholarship.

91. Partners in Pottstown Public Schools Foundation Scholarship - Interest
This scholarship is awarded to a member of the senior class who has been accepted by an institution of higher learning.  The financial need of the student will be considered in the selection process. This award is the interest on a trust fund.

92. Stanley I. Davenport, Jr., Financial Aid Scholarship _ Interest
To a member of the senior class who has been accepted by an accredited college.  The need and the academic ability are the two criteria considered for this award.

96. Robert P. Smith Scholarships - Interest
A scholarship in the name of Robert P. Smith shall be awarded equally to the scholars of the graduating class of PHS who shall during their course in said school, attain the highest average and the second highest average for the full four year term.

97. William Custer Hartranft Prize - Interest
To the scholar in the graduating class in the Pottstown Senior High School who shall, during their course in said school, attain the highest average for the four year term; the amount is the interest on a trust fund.
