Pottstown School District needs to better utilize facilities
Published: Friday, March 12, 2010
Mr. Tom Hylton's discussion paper on the possible reorganization of Pottstown's elementary schools is a well-researched and thought-out plan. It should give the Pottstown School Board an excellent starting point to discuss the physical aspects of the elementary buildings and what should be done to them in terms of renovation (possible new windows, new wiring) and energy efficiency.
Many of Pottstown's residents are probably not aware of the underutilized space at the middle school and high school. It makes perfect sense to efficiently use these beautifully renovated buildings. Mr. Hylton's proposal to move 5th graders to the middle school and administrative offices to the high school accomplishes several goals without burdening the tapped-out taxpayers.
I hope that the school board and the administration seriously consider the recommendations made at the Neighborhood Schools Committee meeting on March 1.
While not every person will agree with all the points and recommendations made, the proposal gives the board a starting point.
The current board members and former board members who are strident in their opposition to the neighborhood schools should remember that the voters of Pottstown spoke at the last two school board elections by not re-electing several board members, including the president, who were against neighborhood schools.
This board needs to stop its petty squabbling and get on with the business of Pottstown's education.
