The Pottstown School District conducted its annual writing awards contest sponsored by the local McDonald’s restaurants. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade competed in the annual essay contest which this year had as its theme “A Tough Decision.” Students not only had the opportunity to display their excellence in writing mechanics but also demonstrated reflective thinking and compassion for others. Rupert Elementary Principal, Mr. Matt Moyer, who serves as the coordinator of the annual event, noted, “Our partnership with McDonald’s Restaurants has helped our students develop a greater understanding of writing techniques and has given them reason to do thoughtful thinking.” Some of the tough decisions that students wrote about included:
First grade Barth student Xochitl Cruz talked about her decision to return a dollar which she found.
First grade Edgewood student Bria Germany explained how she made a decision to be strong for her mother and help in understanding the transition of their family moving.
Fourth grade Franklin student Giankirk Kimmell explained how he recognized a bad decision that he made when he chose to go outside and play with his friends instead of doing his homework.
Fifth grade Lincoln student Timothy Trego outlined the process of analyzing his decision about which sport to play.
Third grade Rupert student Brice Cole described the tough decision that had to be made about telling the truth concerning breaking a family possession.
Sixth grade Middle School student Sara Levengood explained what she was thinking when she made the decision to support her soccer team over going ice skating with her friends.
Seventh grade Middle School student Jada Burton explained how she chose to become a cheerleader.
Eighth grade Middle School student Nicolas Muriel talked about his decision making process to participate in the middle school band and become a clarinet player.
Bruce and Marcia Graham, the owners of the local McDonald’s restaurants, are longtime supporters of public
education and in addition to sponsoring the annual writing contest are supporters of numerous programs
recognizing academic achievement. This year’s award winners were invited to a special ceremony held at the
McDonald’s restaurant where they received certificates and tee-shirts recognizing their writing achievements.
