Over 250 fifth grade students from the Pottstown School District gained valuable knowledge of our country’s history while taking a tour of historical sites in Philadelphia. Students had an opportunity to see history firsthand by visiting outstanding Philadelphia landmarks such as the Quaker Meetinghouse, the Betsy Ross House, Elfreth’s Alley, the U.S. Mint, Benjamin Franklin’s House/Museum, Franklin’s gravesite, the War Museum, Independence Hall, and the Liberty Bell.
Teachers Aaron Torrence and Matt Cohen made the visit to Philadelphia even more memorable and educationally significant by creating a Historical Philadelphia Scavenger Hunt. The hunt provided an outstanding tool for students to gain a deeper understanding of our country’s history and appreciate their Philadelphia experience.
Kelli Wolfel assisted in the organization of the day’s events. She noted, “There is great value to our students experiencing firsthand the history of our country. The field trip helps to make the classroom experience come alive.” Upon their return to school, students developed projects and mini books relating to their experience.
Terri Lampe, Executive Director of the Foundation for Pottstown Education, which provided the financial support for the transportation, expressed, “The Foundation looks forward to supporting events of this type which add to the learning experiences that our students have and ultimately play a role in their development as future citizens of our community.”
